Has 'Castle' Jumped The Shark? [Nov. 26th, 2010|05:54 pm]
The Castle Fan Community

"The first season was really fun. The second was fun, but some of the writing started to lag. This season seems to be very formulaic. It's like you can tell who the murderer is within the first 10 minutes. It's also starting to pull a Bones, with giving the main characters other main squeezes while the fans scream at the TV set wanting Kate and Rick to get together." — qweely

But "jumped the shark" doesn't mean "this show just isn't fun anymore" . . . so no, it hasn't.

Yeah, this show will jump the shark when they kill off Beckett and replace her with Mischa Barton (*knock wood*). Otherwise, yeah, no. For me personally, as long as I still enjoy watching a show, even if I'm not OMG IS IT MONDAY YET every week, then the show hasn't jumped anything.

But also, I've noticed that criticism for this show's Bonesification has started a lot earlier (late season 2, early season 3) than it did for the actual Bones, so I think that there's a lot less tolerance for blunders and anything that is not OMG so perfect automatically means that the show is going downhill. With 22 episodes a season, not every episode is going to be Sucker Punch or Vampire Weekend and that's OK, but some of the comments I read about Almost Famous (whose biggest crime was that it was boring IMO) made it sound as if it had single-handedly made the show jump the shark.

Seriously? Almost Famous? It wasn't the most amazing episode ever but it had no fatal flaws. What were people complaining about?

In my opinion, the show has stayed true to it's premise, is consistently entertaining (if not perfectly brilliant every episode) and has made considerable steps to evolve and explore the characters and is still doing so. As long as it continues to do all those things, it'll be fine.

The term 'jumping the shark' is way too easily thrown around these days.

Yeah, I don't know either. There was just a LOT of disappointment (seriously, you'd think someone got killed off) over the fact that it was *gasp* not that great an episode AND it came on the heels of the amazing 3XK and how that meant the show had lost its spark and everything was gonna suck from there on. IDK.

Consistently entertaining is EXACTLY how I describe this show. It's never gonna be Fringe or Lost, but I like to watch these characters do even the most mundane things every week, and that's enough for me. They do need to watch it with the Castle/Beckett thing, but given that I have never stopped watching Bones and still thoroughly enjoy it, that wouldn't even be a dealbreaker for me.

Dear qweely, nobody is holding a gun to your head. Do yourself a favor and stop watching "Castle," and instead to go "SVU" or something like that where you can't really tell off the bat who the culprit is, if that is more your thing.

Best of luck.

Jumping what where and when?
I'm enjoying Castle a lot more lately. OF COURSE they gonna drag Kate/Rick a little BUT surely won't be 6 effin' seasons. I'm with Stana in one thing: they could be together and make the show awesome anyway.

I think the writers are doing a great job. Just sayin'

Yeah lets rush and put them together, that will kill all the fun IMO.

People bitched about the same stuff with Lois & Clark from the 90's (showing my age here lol) They wanted to put them tother. When they finally did the ratings went down and the show got cancled.

So yeah not in a rush to see them as a couple so fast.

Umm. Going to disagree with you that the coupling of Lois and Clark was the reason the ratings went down.

I'm going to go with the complete and utter batshit writing is what caused the ratings to go down. Season 3 was pretty much nothing but "what ridiculous ways can we come up with to keep them apart?" And nothing but. Frog eating clones? Therapists conspiring to prevent their patients from regaining their memories of their fiancée? H.G FUCKING WELLS SHOWING UP TO PREVENT THEM FROM HAVING SEX. BECAUSE THEM HAVING SEX MEANS THAT LOIS WILL DIE OF A SOULMATE CURSE. OH and every single one of Lex Luthor's random bastard adult children deciding that Lois must be their one and only cause Daddy was into her. The rip off Phantom of the Opera one was the best example of this.

Season 4 was less crazy, but by then the damage had already been done.

Point is, in my opinion, UST is not the reason a show fails, BAD WRITING IS.

Amen to this and everything above that.

I think that people should actually look up what "Jumped the Shark" really means before using it to describe another show, because Castle is far from jumping the shark. And it is nowhere near Bones' level of recent failure, that's for sure.

I feel like the tension between Castle and Beckett has gone out as of late, but that doesn't mean the show isn't fun.

When he wanted her and she didn't want him, there was a fun pursuit. Once Kate realized she loved him back, they tossed in the ex-wife thing to keep it from happening, but honestly, I think they'd both go for it right now and just... don't. Not because of any particular obstacle. They just don't seem honestly interested any longer.

no shark or jump

All in all Castle is still good but I do think it has lost some of its charm lately, this season for me had only three high notes: 3xk / nikki heat /knockdown. And as far as Caskett goes, it can happen and not F the show up, just takes decent/creative writing, I think Chuck is a good example here.
